SAGES OF THE BAMBOO GROVE’
PARFUMIER

KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

The parfumier is finely carved in varying reliefs and
pierced to depict the Seven Sages of the Bamboo
Grove engaging in scholarly pursuits incuding
calligraphy and chess, in a deep wooded forest
lined with lush pine and bamboo trees.

AN INCISED BAMBOO WRIST REST

SIGNED CHEN MANSHENG, DATED JIACHEN
CYCLICAL YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1784 AND OF
THE PERIOD

The gently arched wrist rest is incised in intaglio
depicting a garden with stems of bamboo and
flowers growing from ornamental rocks, the
underside inscribed with a five-character sixteen-
line poem on tea, followed by a jiachen cyclical
date, the signature Chen Mansheng, and the seal
reading Mansheng.

Chen Mansheng (1768-1822), also known as Chen
Hongshou, was an accomplished poet, painter,
calligrapher and seal carver, heralded as one of the
Eight Masters of Xiling. He was also known for his
innovative designs of Yixing teapots, many of which
were highly sought after by connoisseurs.

             竹雕竹石圖陳曼生款臂擱

刻款:茗記芳園種,開時照上春。
未舒千葉嫩,先展一旗新。穀雨催花日,
楳風發火辰。柯心生意透,槍楊壽眉真。
片己輕蟬皺,團難小鳳匀。綠雲浮滿地,
碧霧細于塵。戰待盧仝枕,祈迎陸羽神。
村娃時采采,香三沁藍荺。甲辰秋月陳曼生作。

印:曼生陳鴻壽 (1768-1822),字子恭,號曼
生,浙江錢塘人。能書善畫,尤工篆刻,
為「西泠八家」之一,其設計的宜興茶壺亦為
人稱道。
