                                                                              The bamboo root is carved as a seated
                                                                              figure of Budai with a jovial expression,
                                                                              resting his back against a rock, and clasping
                                                                              a peach in one hand. Small boys are
                                                                              depicted clambering playfully on his loose
                                                                              robes.

                                                                              The box and cover are carved and shaped

                                                                              in the form of a stylised reclining tiger,

                                                                              with the underside bearing an inscription

                                                                              which mentions ‘tiger talisman’. The

                                                                              inkstone is of rectangular form with a

                                                                              deeply carved rectangular inkwell, and the

                                                                              underside is inscribed with a name above

                                                                              a seal.
