‘GARDENIA’ DISHES
HONGZHI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE
PERIOD (1488-1505); JIAJING SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE
CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)
Each dish is painted in underglaze-blue with a central gardenia
spray bearing two flowers and buds. The cavetto is decorated with
evenly spaced sprays of grapes, a beribboned lotus flower and pod,
a two pomegranates and a persimmon branch. The exterior of
each is painted with seven rose blooms on a continuous meander,
all on a rich Imperial yellow ground within double-line borders.
