A RED LACQUER 'DRAGON' BOX AND COVER
JIAJING INCISED AND GILT SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF
THE PERIOD (1522-1566)
The top of the box is deeply carved with a sinuous dragon writhing
around a shou medallion between camellia and crabapple to one side
and a fruiting branch and lingzhi to the other, above a band of phoenixes
alternating with cranes in flight between rose sprays on the sloping
shoulder, which is repeated on the rounded lower body below a band of
lingzhi meander on the vertical sides. The gilt-highlighted reign mark is
incised in a line in the center of the black-lacquered base.

Julio Dormal (1846-1924), Paris and Buenos Aires, and by descent to his
son Carlos Dormal, Buenos Aires, and thence by descent to the present
owners.
