A FINELY-DECORATED SMALL MOTHER-OF-PEARL-
INLAID BLACK LACQUER OCTAGONAL BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
The top is finely decorated with a scene of officials forming a line
near a gate outside a pavilion compound set against a landscape
and stationed with guards. Inside the pavilion are two figures in
conversation. The faceted shoulder of the cover is decorated with
shaped panels enclosing further figural scenes above a band of
roundels on the sides. The box is decorated with various animals and
mythical beasts within the shaped panels.
