A PAIR OF MASSIVE TILEWORKS FIGURES OF
SEATED BUDDHIST LIONS
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
The male lion is shown seated on a rectangular base,
holding a brocade ball under its left front paw. The
female lion is also shown seated on a rectangular base
nursing its cub who is lying between her front legs. Both
are covered with green, amber and cream glazes.

Lucille Vessa, Honeychurch Antiques, Hong Kong,
acquired in the 1990s.
An important private collection, Hong Kong.
A related pair of monumental Buddhist lions, Ming
dynasty, is in the Newark Museum, New Jersey,
accession number 39.430.1-2. A massive turquoise-
glazed figure of a seated lion (32 in. high without
a stand) from the Robert B. and Beatrice C. Mayer
Collection was sold at Christie’s New York, 13
September 2019, lot 1083. A pair of massive turquoise-
glazed lions with stands (80 in. high) from the C.
Ruxton and Audrey B. Love Collection was sold at
Christie's New York, 20 October 2004, lot 317 and
again at Bonhams London, 17 May 2018, lot 70.
