122 | Bonhams A rare blue and white ‘Europa and the
bull’ conical coffee pot and cover
Early 18th century
The body of octagonal section, wider at the
domed base raised on three rounded feet and
narrowing towards the mouth, painted on
each side with a circular medallion enclosing a
nude Europa riding a bull across waves beside
a sea nymph, the medallion surrounded by
decorative lappets, above a landscape scene of
Western figures in a Bacchanalian frenzy and
hunting with bows and arrows and spears,
the long straight spout with a silver mount,
the octagonal domed cover with two semi-
circular cartouches enclosing a naked putto,
surmounted by a Buddhist lion finial.
