A rare pair of Chinese Imari baluster vases
and covers
18th century
Each vase with two qilin painted in underglaze
blue, each beneath a pair of iron-red and gilt
phoenix in flight and surrounded by lush peony
blossoms of leafy stems, phoenix divided by one
whole and two half floral medallions, all above
stiff lappets at the foot and beneath a row of
large ruyi-head at the shoulder containing floral
sprays amid white clouds reserved against an
iron-red ground, the neck also with floral sprays,
the domed covers each with a pair of phoenix
in flight amidst peony and chrysanthemum and
surmounted by a rounded finial rising to a point
and painted with gilt petals.
Each 61cm (24in) high (4).
