Provenance: from the collection of Sir William Empson (1906-1984), the
literary critic and poet who taught at Peking University and in Kunming
in the 1930s. The painting was taken from China to England by Lady
Hetta Empson in 1936, and thence passed by descent.

是文學評論家及詩人,於1930年代授課於北京大學和昆明。此畫在1936
年由Hetta Empson爵士夫人從中國帶到英國,並由家族繼承下去
款識:作大寫畫,能草墨大方不失形似即可觀矣。蘭炆仁弟以此呈余,余
曰可為題數字助其雅興。白石

The inscription may be translated as:
‘When doing an impressionistic painting, if one can sketch with the ink loosely
and not lose the formal likeness, then it is worthy of appreciation. Lan Wenren
approached me on this, so I said I would inscribe a few characters for him to
help his aesthetic mood. signed Bai Shi’
