               A famille rose ‘snowscape’ vase
               20th century, signed Yu Wenxiang (1910-1990)
               Delicately enamelled around the body with a continuous scene of terraced
               pagodas and other pavilions housing small figures within a snowy wooded
               mountainous landscape with a river flowing under a narrow bridge on stilts,
               the rim gilded and the underside with an iron-red and gilt four-character mark
               Jingdezhen zhi. 34cm (13¼in) high

               Provenance: acquired in Shanghai in the 1990s.

               The inscription reads:
               九州積氣峰前合,
               浪顯連山噴雪來.
               丙寅年冬
               which may be translated as:
               ‘From across the nine provinces [China] energy gathers before the peaks,
               The coming waves resemble a snowy mountain range.
               Winter of bingyin year [AD1926]’
               The artist He Xuren apparently acknowledged Yu Wenxiang to be his best
               student. Compare a related vase, signed Yu Wenxiang, circa 1958, from the
               Anthony Evans Collection, sold in these rooms on 10 November 2011, lot 603.

               20th century, signed Liu Yucen with Yucen seal
               The delicately potted vase enamelled with one golden-brown bird perched on a
               long grassy stem growing beside a other flowering grasses and a pink-flowered
               spray, two further golden-brown birds and two greyish-brown birds in flight
               above, the reverse with an inscription and seal, the underside with an iron-red
               seal. 23.5cm (9¾in) high

               二十世紀 粉彩花鳥紋瓶 「劉雨岑」款
               款識:粧面迴青鏡,歌塵起畫梁。潭湖漁劉雨岑寫於珠山。
               印文:雨岑
               This may be translated as:
               “A beautiful woman’s face is reflected in the bronze mirror, amidst song and
               dance the dust rises up to the painted beams.” Written in Zhushan by deep lake
               fisherman Liu Yucen.
               The inscription is couplet from the poem “Mei 梅” (plum) composed by the Tang
               Dynasty poet Li Qiao.
