A blue and white flaring vase, gu
Shunzhi
The flaring neck painted with two birds in
flight and another two birds perching on
bare branches issuing from rockwork besides
abundantly blooming branches of magnolia,
orchid sprays and bamboo clumps, the central
section with prunus, rockwork and orchid and
the lower section with stiff pendent lappets,
wood stand.

清順治 青花花鳥紋花觚
The flaring gu form was introduced to
Jingdezhen in the late Ming period; the first
examples appeared during the reign of the
Chongzhen Emperor, and by the Shunzhi
period the form was more elongated as on
the present lot. A related example from the
Palace Museum is illustrated by Chen Runmin,
Qing Shunzhi Kangxi Chao Qinghua Ci, Beijing,
2004, no.51, and see another smaller example
(38cm high) but also with birds and flowers
amongst rockwork, ibid., no.55.
