A gold-ground ‘nine-dragon’ silk carpet
Late Qing Dynasty, Wu ying dian yu yong
inscription
Woven in vibrant tones of red, blue, yellow,
green and brown with a central four-clawed
dragon surrounded by eight five-clawed
dragons each chasing a flaming pearl and all
on a gilt thread ground, all enclosed within
a border of foaming waves set with three
flaming pearls in each corner and mountains
on the centre of each side flanked by further
flaming pearls, the top side with five characters
Wu ying dian yu yong (for the Imperial use in
the Hall of Military Eminence).

A rectangular ‘dragon’ carpet
Late Qing Dynasty, Jingren Gong bei yong
inscription
Woven in shades of blue, yellow, pale violet
and reddish-brown with a ferocious full-faced
five-clawed dragon encircled by four smaller
ones symmetrically placed above and below
the main one amidst floral scrolls, surrounded
by a narrow key-fret border within a band
of the Eight Buddhist Emblems alternating
with blooming flowers, with a five-character
inscription Jingren Gong bei yong (for the use
in the Palace of Great Benevolence) at the top.
