                        TECHNICAL  NOTES
                        1942.9.559: The vessel has a wide, sharply trimmed foot-ring. The  flowers  and  butterflies painted  on  a green ground.  The
                        recessed base is covered with a thin  colorless enamel. 1942.9.560:  handles of both are in the shape of a fish. A dragon's head
                        A chip on the end of the spout has been filled  and painted.  appears at the  base of each hexagonal spout. A band  of
                                                                       green  chevrons  surrounds  the  base  of  each  pot,  above
                        PROVENANCE                                     which  is a band  of ascending flower  petals. The rectan-
                        J.  Pierpont  Morgan  [1837-1913],  New  York,  by  1904. (Duveen  gular  panels on  the  neck  of both  pots  are painted  with
                        Brothers,  New  York  and  London);  sold  1915 to  Peter  A.  B.  flowers  against a fish-roe diaper ground. The  openwork
                        Widener,  Lynnewood  Hall,  Elkins Park,  Pennsylvania; inheri-
                        tance from  Estate of Peter A. B. Widener by gift  through power  tops, firmly attached to the main  body of both  pots, are
                        of appointment of Joseph E. Widener, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.  decorated  with  plum  blossoms.  The  knob  of  each  is
                                                                       molded  in the shape of a plum  blossom.
                           XCEPT  FOR  THE  GLAZE  COLORS—famille  verte  for                                   SL
                        E 1942.9.559  and  famille  jaune  for  1942.9.560—the
                        wine pots are similar. The sides are decorated with open-  REFERENCES
                        work panels depicting the Three Friends of Winter: pine,  1904-1911  Morgan:  i:  103,  no.  644  [1942.9.599],  no.  645
                        bamboo,  and  plum.  These  panels  are  surrounded  by  [1942.9.560].
