           TWO SANCAI GLAZED POTTERY GUARDIAN FIGURES
           Tang Dynasty
           Each figure dressed in layered armor and standing upon a recumbent
           beast supported on a short rockery base, the figure’s head and
           hands left unglazed and the remaining surfaces covered with a
           combination of green, chestnut and ivory colored glazes.
           Each 32 1/2in (82.5cm) high, fitted wood stands

           Another single imposing figure of this type, also shown standing on
           a recumbent bull, is illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art - Chinese
           Ceramics I: Neolithic to Liao, Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 119. For another
           pair standing atop demons, see Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Vol. One,
           Tokyo, 1976, p. 79, pl. 209.

           These imposing military-like guardian figures are remarkable for their
           fine modeling and detailed armor. Positioned at the entrance to the
           tomb, such figures with their frowning expressions and imposing
           stance warded off evil spirits.
