A JADE CARVING OF A RECUMBENT BEAST
18th/19th century
Carved in the round of flattened oblong form, the mythical beast qilin
of dragon head and deer body turning its head back facing the bushy
trifurcated tail, the feet tugged close to the body, the maned head
boldly rendered with protruding eyes, thick horns and elongated
whiskers, a cluster of clouds spilled from the open mouth, a pair of
cranes with billowing clouds by its side, the stone of celadon color
softly polished, leaving the mottled ocher ‘skin’ to highlight the rising
moon and the tail.
4 7/8in (12.3cm) long; 3in (7.6cm) high ; Fitted wood stand.
