A PALE CELADON JADE INCISED SNUFF BOTTLE

60 | BONHAMS Of flattened meiping form, with an everted lip and a
concave foot, the stone with icy white inclusions and a
russet streak, one side incised with a blossoming plum
tree, reversed by a poem incised in regular script.

The author of the poem is the Qianlong emperor. The
same verse appears on a jade snuff bottle formerly in the
collection of Mary and George Bloch, sold in our Hong
Kong galleries 27 May 2012 lot 14, as well as a jade
screen in the collection of the National Palace Museum

A BLACK JADE SNUFF BOTTLE
Suzhou school, late Qing dynasty
Very well-hollowed, of compressed globular form with a
slightly waisted neck, subtly recessed rim and foot, finely
carved to one side in relief presumably depicting Wang
Xizhi and an attendant with geese under an arching pine,
reversed with a pine and rocks, the carving details carefully
designed to best utilize the natural color variations of the
matrix, dominated with charcoal black and cast with white
and gray.
