A rare cinnabar lacquer ‘bajixiang’ three-piece
altar set
Qianlong seal marks and of the period
The tripod censer elaborately carved on the rounded body with the
Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang, on the front with the vase, the
victory banner, the lotus and the double fish, and on the back with
the parasol, the conch, wheel of fire and the endless knot, all amidst
fine foliate scrolls against a black lacquer geometric ground, the body
raised on three bulbous feet, each carved with a lotus on a foliate
scroll, the waisted neck also with lotus scroll beneath the rim carved
with a Qianlong seal mark flanked by keyfret and the flaring handles
each with lotus and a bat, the separate lining of gilt bronze and the
domed cover with further lotus meander beneath the gilt bronze finial
cast as a flame-breathing dragon coiled around a pearl and cloud
scrolls, each of the two pricket candlesticks with similarly carved with
four of the Eight Buddhist Emblems alternating with lotus on the high
foot, and the remaining four symbols alternating with lotus around the
tray rim, the slender neck also with lotus meander and the pricket of
gilt bronze.
The censer and cover: 34.4cm (13 1/2in) high; each candlestick:
31.4cm (12 3/8in) high (4).
