                      16th century
                      The top of the cover deeply carved with seven
                      young boys at play fighting over a kite, all within a
                      circular cartouche above quatrefoil diaper ground,
                      the sides of the box and cover each with a band of
                      key-fret scrolls. 5.9cm (2 3/4in) diam. (2).

                      Qianlong/Jiaqing
                      The hexafoil tray intricately carved through layers
                      of red, brown and black, featuring a centralised
                      hexafoil medallion bordered by a band of keyfret
                      scrolls and a band of evenly interspersed cartouches
                      and double coins at the cavetto, the base covered in
                      a lustrous black lacquer. 18.6cm (7 3/8in) wide

                      Unlike the more common four lobed shaped
                      cinnabar lacquer trays, the shape of the present lot
                      is rare. Two cinnabar lacquer trays of similar form
                      and decoration, with Qianlong six-character marks,
                      are illustrated in Many Splendors: Yuan, Ming and
                      Qing Lacquerware from the Chao Collection, Beijing,
                      2010, pp.134-135, no.43 and p.173, no.64.

                      A rare and large pair of cinnabar
                      lacquer ‘Eight Immortals’ vases and
                      stands
                      Jiaqing
                      Each with a lobed cartouche on each side, variously
                      carved with scenes containing scholars and
                      Immortals, including Lu Dongbin, Li Tieguai, Cao
                      Guojiu, Zhongli Quan, He Xian’gu, Han Xiangzi,
                      Hehe Erxian, Zhang Guolao and Lan Caihe,
                      performing various activities, each group within a
                      river scene set with pagodas and rocky banks, the
                      foot and neck of each vase densely carved with
                      scrolling lotus and chrysanthemum meanders, all
                      raised above a leiwen ground of black lacquer, each
                      stand raised on six ruyi-shaped feet and carved with
                      dense lotus scrolls.
                      Each vase with stand 87cm (34 1/4in) high (4).
