                                                           The stone is carved in the round as a recumbent ram with its
                                                           mouth grasping a spray of lingzhi highlighted by the russet skin of
                                                           the stone. The stone is of an even milky white tone.

         A PALE CELADON AND
         RUSSET JADE CARVING OF
         A MYTHICAL BEAST
         LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH
         CENTURY
         The single horned beast is carved with its
         head turned to one side, grasping a large
         lingzhi spray in its mouth. Its broad head
         is detailed with bulging eyes and pricked
         back ears. The body is further carved
         to show nodules of the spine above a
         bifurcated tail swept to one side.
