               A TIANBAI ‘MYTHICAL BEAST’ SEAL MADE FOR
               YOU TONG
               EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
               The rectangular seal is surmounted by a finial in the form of a
               single-horned recumbent beast with bushy mane and tail, the seal
               face carved with a long inscription explaining the origin of the
               owner’s style name, Hui’an.                                                            impression

               Hui’an is the style name of You Tong (1618-1704), a learned scholar-
               official active during the Kangxi reign, as well as a renowned poet and
               playwriter.

               印文:中年自號悔庵,故曰悔遲存乎?悔故所居為震天無咎□,致福則
               貞吉悔已,故以貞悔名吾堂。

               尤侗(1618 - 1704),原籍蘇州府長洲,明末清初著名詩人、戲曲家。
               字展成、同人,早年自號三中子,又號悔庵。康熙十八年(1679)入選
               博學鴻儒科,授翰林院檢討,參與修《明史》。四十二年康熙南巡,得
               晉官號為侍講。工古文詩詞,詩效溫、李、白,號稱才子。著有《西堂
               全集》、《艮齋雜記》、《鶴栖堂文集》及《鈞天樂》等。

                                                                 The rectangular seal is surmounted by a finial in the form of a
                                                                 recumbent phoenix. The side is incised with the signature Shang
                impressions                                      Jun. The seal face is carved with six characters.

                                                                 Shangjun is the pseudonym of Zhou Bin, a native of Zhangzhou, Fujian
                                                                 province, who was a renowned carver of seal knobs, and is thought to
                                                                 have worked during the mid to late 17th century.

                                                                 印文:幾生修到梅花;款識:尚均

                                                                 尚均,本名周彬,福建漳浦人,尤善於印鈕雕刻,相傳曾為康熙朝宮廷
                                                                 御工,供奉內廷。
