A towering figure in the history of Chinese art, Wen Fong
(1930-2018) was born in Shanghai and earned his doctoral
degree from Princeton University, where he taught Chinese
art history from 1954 until his retirement in 1999. Concurrent
with his contributions at Princeton, he served from 1971 to
2000 as a special consultant to the Department of Asian Art at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His vision shaped the Met’s
collection of Asian art and drove important acquisitions, adding
masterpieces to the Museum’s world-renowned collection.
Professor Fong was a prolific scholar, educator and connoisseur
who trained generations of art historians and contributed to
seminal publications on Chinese art. Part of Professor Fong’s
personal collection was offered by Christie’s in May 2016 and
achieved exceptional results.
方聞教授（1930-2018），生於上海，國際著名美術史家、藝術文
物鑒賞專家、教育家，普林斯頓大學博士。1954年開始任職普林
斯頓大學教授、藝術考古系主任，至1999年榮休。1971至2000年
之間，任大都會博物館亞洲部特別顧問。在方聞的領導下，大都
會致力擴展亞洲藝術方面館藏，使之躋身世界上頂尖亞洲藝術收
藏之一。方聞教授不僅桃李滿天下，亦曾出版多部有關中國文物
及重要藝術收藏的研究著作。佳士得於2016年春季曾有幸拍賣部
份方聞教授藏品，獲得佳績。
