A GILT-BRONZE STUPA
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
set upon a square-section throne, the lower
and upper registers cast with high-relief lotus
petals, chased with floral and vajra motifs, and
inset with small colored stones, all supporting
the ‘four steps’ leading to a rounded bumpa,
the bumpa cast with beast masks suspending
golden chains inset with stones, a petal-form
shrine installed to one side of the bumpa, all
surmounted by a square harmika, conical spire
flanked by two teardrop-shaped appendages,
and topped with a lotus-petal-form parasol and
representations of the sun, moon, and ‘jewel’,
the section above the harmika detaches (2)

MONGOLIA, 18TH CENTURY
the proper right hand raised in vitarka mudra,
each hand holding the ends of lotus stems, the
blossoms of which flank each shoulder and bear
a kundika and a book, the hair in a high topknot
and applied with blue pigment, the elaborate
jewelry inlaid with hardstones, the low-slung
dhoti secured just below the shapely waist, with
repoussé sashes trailing down either side of the
body, raised on a circular lotus base, the base
plate incised with a double vajra
