PALDEN LHAMO
TIBETO-CHINESE, 18TH CENTURY
the fierce deity seated on a donkey draped with
flayed human skin, wearing a tiger-skin loincloth
and further flayed skin around the bare
shoulders, the ferocious face cold-painted, with
a third eye between the eyebrows, the flaming
hair surmounted by a five-skull turquoise-inlaid
crown, with a garland of severed heads and a
billowing celestial scarf over the shoulders, a
ball of thread and a tally stick hanging from the
donkey’s trappings, raising a sandalwood staff
in the proper right hand and the left holding a
skull cup of blood, all supported on an oval base
of turbulent waves and bones surrounded by
craggy peaked rocks, the base sealed with a
base plate incised with a double vajra

on a rectangular plinth draped with a cloth
centered by a blossom, the hands joined to hold
a bhumpa, dressed in a sash and dhoti, adorned
in jewelry and an elaborate tiara, the figure
framed by a flaming mandorla, the incised mark
in a horizontal line at the front of the base, Da
Qing Qianlong Xinsi Nian Jingzao
