            A BLUE AND WHITE FIGURE OF A
            SEATED LUOHAN
            MING DYNASTY, WANLI PERIOD

            well modeled, the figure seated in dhyanasana
            atop a tall, slightly waisted rockwork pedestal,
            one hand holding a flame symbol, the other
            at the waist pulling the edge of the long
            voluminous sleeve closer to the body, the
            loose robes falling in rhythmic folds around
            the body, the head with rounded contours in
            benign meditative pose, the close shaven head,
            downcast eyes and thick brows all picked out in
            underglaze blue, the overall glaze with a bluish
            tint pooling in the recesses to pale blue-green
            height 8 in., 20.3 cm
            a similarly decorated related figure of Budai,
            from the edward t. Chow Collection, was sold
            in our hong Kong rooms, 19th may 1981, lot 417.
            another figure of Budai with underglaze blue
            decoration on the robe and pedestal sold in our
            paris rooms, 27th June 2001, lot 201. see also
            a figure of a boy, attributed to the Wanli period,
            included in the exhibition and illustrated in The
            Fame of Flame Imperial Wares of the Jiajing
            and Wanli Periods, University museum and art
            Gallery, the University of hong Kong, hong

            A BLUE AND WHITE ‘DRAGON’
            MEIPING
            MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
            the sides rising to a rounded shoulder sweeping
            inward to a short, waisted neck, the central
            register with two line-drawn dragons contesting
            a ‘flaming pearl’, all above a register of rocky
            peaks emerging from swelling waves below, the
            shoulder with four shaped cartouches enclosing
            fruiting peach sprays reserved against a
            wanzi-pattern ground, upright plantain leaves
            encircling the neck
            height 10⅝ in., 27 cm
