 A LOBED CINNABAR LACQUER CUP STAND
 SONG DYNASTY
 of globular form with rounded sides collared with a six-lobed
 dish resembling a mallow flower, all supported on a hollow
 flared foot, enveloped in cinnabar lacquer, save for the interior
 of the foot and the rims, outlining the silhouette of the vessel,
 Japanese wood box

 Four Southern Song cinnabar lacquer cup stands are
 illustrated in The Colors and Forms of Song and Yuan China:
 Featuring Lacquerwares, Ceramics, and Metalwares, Nezu
 Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 2004, nos 154, 155, 157 and 158;
 one is modelled with chrysanthemum petals, one is in the
 form of a lotus, and the remaining two are circular. See also a
 related black lacquer example of this mallow form in the Los
 Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, published in Hai-
 wai yi-chen. Chinese Art in Overseas Collections. Lacquerware,
 Taipei, 1987, pl. 24; and a further example from the collection
