          A CIZHOU RUSSET-SPLASHED BLACK-GLAZED
          BOWL 來源:
NORTHERN SONG – JIN DYNASTY 日本私人收藏
the interior covered in a lustrous black glaze accentuated with
liberally splashed short russet streaks, the exterior decorated
with a lustrous persimmon glaze stopping neatly above the
foot to reveal the pale buff body, Japanese wood box
          14.2 cm, 5⅝ in.
          PROVENANCE
          A Japanese private collection.
          HK$ 400,000-600,000
          US$ 52,000-77,500
Asymmetrical and yet aesthetically pleasing, the russet
markings on the present bowl were created by applying a
slip which contains iron-oxide on top of the dark glaze before
firing. Such abstract patterns of russet splashes on Cizhou
wares were probably inspired by teabowls from the Southern
Jian kilns, and were produced during the Northern Song and
Jin period (Robert D. Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell and
Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown and Black-Glazed Ceramics,
400-1400, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge,
          Mass., 1995-96, p. 32; see lot 31).
          Two related conical bowls are included in ibid., cat. nos 37a-b;
and another with larger russet mottles is offered in this sale,
          lot 2.
