               An unusual pair of famille rose and
               gilt ‘double-phoenix’ vases
               Guangxu
               Each of flattened baluster form with the body
               moulded in the shape of two green-feathered
               phoenix flanking the vase and the neck forming
               the handle with the beak biting the rim of the vase,
               the ground glazed turquoise with two grisaille and
               white enamelled four-clawed dragons on each
               side, wood stands.
               Each 35.5cm (14in) high (4).

               An unusual ‘double-phoenix’ flambé-
               glazed baluster vase
               Guangxu
               The vase moulded to imitate the feathered wings
               of two phoenix stretching around the body, the
               curving neck of each bird forming a handle with
               the beak and crest resting against the flaring neck,
               all covered with a thick glaze of bluish-grey with
               streaks of cream, rich russet and brown suggesting
               feathers, the base unglazed.
