A FINE PAIR OF DOUCAI ‘LANÇA CHARACTERS’ CUPS
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN DOUBLE SQUARES
AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)
Each is decorated on the exterior with a frieze of Sanskrit script in Lança characters in
underglaze-blue, each supported on a lotus flower in a different shade of enamel, enclosed
by a slender undulating stem with clusters of spiky leaves, above a band of ruyi-heads
interspersed by petals encircling the base.
