64 A PAIR OF HONGMU PRICKET
CANDLESTICKS
19TH CENTURY
The openwork candlesticks are carved in the
shape of linked rings rising from a stepped,
double-lobed base, the shape repeated
and inverted for the two drip pans. The
uppermost drip pan is ftted with a pewter
liner that fts over the pricket. Together with a
pair of wax candles of square shape molded
and painted around the sides with jardiniGres
and vases of different fowering branches
between xuangxi (‘double happiness’)
characters above and below and key-fret
borders.

AN UNUSUAL LARGE BOXWOOD ROOT
CARVING OF A CELESTIAL DEER
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The deer is shown standing on three tall,
slender legs, with the left foreleg raised and
bent backwards to follow the shape of the
root, as does the sharply curved body and
long, bifurcated tail. The head is turned
to the side and the ears are shown pricked
below tufts of hair and the curved antlers.
The fgure fts into a hongmu rockwork base
as does a separately made boxwood lingzhi
stem with separately made boxwood fungus
head.
