A PAIR OF HONGMU ARMCHAIRS AND
FOOT RESTS
19TH CENTURY
Each has a tall back splat carved with
chilong scrollwork enclosed within a shaped
medallion and is framed by the openwork
back and side rails carved as archaistic scrolls.
The wide rectangular seat is above a plain,
beaded apron carved with scrollwork. The
legs are of square section and are joined
by a straight stretcher and terminate in
scroll-form feet. The foot rest has a lattice
openwork top set in the rectangular frame
above a plain apron, supported on squat legs
terminating in shaped feet.
Chairs 38º in. (97.2 cm.) high, 26º in. (66.7
cm.) wide, 20æ in. (52.7 cm.) deep; foot rests

18TH-19TH CENTURY
The back splat is carved with a bat
suspending a chime above pairs of bats, and
fanked by archaistic scroll-form back and
side rails set with openwork, scroll-form
spandrels above the rectangular seat and
narrow waist. The whole is raised on beaded
legs of square section set with openwork
corner spandrels and joined by a foot rest in
the front and beaded stretchers at the sides
and back, all above shaped aprons.
