A BRONZE FIGURE OF PADMASAMBHAVA
TIBET, 15TH CENTURY
The Lotus-Born Guru is seated atop an elaborate double-lotus throne,
wielding a vajra in his right hand and skull cup in left, with a khatvanga
resting against his left shoulder. He is draped in voluminous robes centered
with a jeweled pendant, and his face is cast with wide-open eyes and
delicate bow-shaped lips and flanked by elongated ears with large rounded
earrings. He wears a headdress with upturned sides and topped with a vajra.
The face, hands, and feet have remains of cold gold and polychromy, and
the base is sealed and decorated with a double-vajra.

A Swiss Private Collection, acquired in the 1990s
Very few images in sculpture of Padmasambhava of comparable size
and date have been offered on the market. Compare with a smaller
15th century bronze figure of Padmasambhava, sold at Christie’s Paris,
10 December 2014, lot 374. See, also, a small gilt-bronze figure of
Padmasambhava, also from the 15th century, sold at Christie’s New York,
15 September 2015, lot 77.
西藏 十五世紀 銅蓮花生坐像
蓮花生全跏趺坐於雙層蓮座之上,右手執金剛杵,左手執嘎巴拉盌,左肩
棲放著一把喀章嘎。身穿寬厚的袈裟,頸戴項鍊。雙目圓睜,雙唇微微上
揚,顯嗔怒的表情。雙耳戴長鐺,頭戴蓮花帽,冠頂鑄金剛杵。臉部有泥
金彩繪跡象,底板未開封,刻金剛杵紋。
