The shrine of rectangular form with an arched tympanum, carved in Wearing a typically high, ribbed headdress, the scholar with gently
relief with a central Buddha seated in dhyanasana and wearing long rounded cheeks and a serene expression, fitted wood stand. 30.5cm
robes falling graciously over the legs, flanked by four bodhisattvas (12in) high (2).

yakshas, the whole surrounded by a flaming halo and supported by a £2,000 - 3,000
waisted pedestal inscribed with an eight-character inscription reading CNY17,000 - 26,000 HK$20,000 - 29,000
‘Da Qi tianbao jiu nian jingzao’ and translating as ‘Made in the ninth
year of the Tianbao era (AD 560) of the Great Qi Dynasty. Provenance
54cm ((21 2/8in) high Collected in China in the 1950s, and thence by descent.
