Painted in black on a green paper label, decorated with
gold, upon a shomotsu, the last volume of a set of twelve.
The work illustrates the historical tale of the Soga family,
and comprises 128 pages of illuminated paintings, accom-
panied by manuscripts relating the complete story of the
sons of Soga, one of Yoritomo’s generals, who was murdered
by another general they were infants at the time of the
;
murder of their father, and were trained to avenge his
death, and on reaching manhood fulfilled their mission. The
paintings are executed in the highest style of the Tosa
school, and the date of the work is probably the middle of
the 17th century. The inscriptions on the opposite page
are copied from different volumes, and have all precisely
the same meaning So-ga mono-ga-ta-ri. The tales of the
