                                                No. 623.

                      Painted in gold upon     a Paper Box of rustic wood-work
                  decorated with gold lacquer.     Fu-so,  Mi.   koku   jiu.  These
                  are the  right-hand   characters  :  they mean,    Resident  of  the
                 province of Mimasaka, the character Mi being an abbreviation
                  of the name of this province.     Fuso   is one of the names by
                  which Japan     is known.     The  three  characters on    the  left
                  cannot be literally rendered   into English, but they mean that
                  the maker was a native of Kazusa, and that his professional
                  name was Usuke.      The seal is that of Yoshikawa, the maker.

                      Painted in black, the lower character stamped in red, upon
                  slate-coloured   lacquer;  No. 624, upon a Writing Table, and
                  No. 625 upon a Writing Case.      Haru-masa Sei-ho.      Harumasa
                  Seiko, the name of the maker.
