A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL BOWLS AND A VASE, FANGHU
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
Each bowl is decorated to the interior with large lotus and peony blossoms
in blue enamels against a white ground. The exterior is decorated with eight
chrysanthemum heads admist scrolling tendrils, all against a turquoise ground.
The small vase is decorated with large lotus heads amongst leafy tendrils, the neck
is applied with a pair of animal-head ring handles.
The bowls: 4√ in. (12.3 cm.) diam.

A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL 'BIRDS AND FLOWER' SQUARE VASE,
FANGHU
MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The vase is decorated to each side with a bird on a fowering branch, including a
kingfsher and a parrot, all on a turquoise ground. Each side of the neck and foot is
decorated with a large lotus head with leafy tendrils.

Although the motif of birds sitting on a fowering branch is a very popular design
for cloisonné enamel of the late Ming period, it is very rare to fnd a depiction of a
kingfsher on such vessel.
