A SICHUAN BURNISHED BLACK POTTERY AMPHORA VASE
Han dynasty
Of pear form with a vertically incised band around the neck beneath a
lozenge-shaped opening at the mouth, the two loop handles resolving
into four raised scrolls on the body supported on a flat circular foot rim
and recessed foot.

leaves accented in green and chestnut on a straw glazed ground, the
straight foot unglazed.

Raised on three short feet, the shallow sides rising to an everted
rim with molded edge, raised on a stepped and spreading pedestal
foot, the buff clay glazed overall with an applied pattern enhanced by
painted iron oxide details to simulate a lively surface of swirled masks
under a transparent glaze.
