A ZITAN ‘SEVEN SAGES’ BRUSHPOT
19th century or later
Made from a single irregularly sectioned piece of finely-
grained dark wood, the exterior decorated in high relief
with a finely carved continuous scene of the ‘Seven
Sages of the Bamboo Grove’, each sage engaged in
various activities in a rocky landscape punctuated with
bamboo and pine trees by a body of water, all supported
on a recessed foot, the wood a rich honey-brown color
with a lustrous patina.

The figure carved dressed in long flowing robes and
standing with a lotus bouquet held at her shoulder, her
other arm holding the hand of a child similarly dressed in
flowing robes, her hand holding aloft a bird cage.
