A CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON
‘PHOENIX-TAIL’ VASE
MING DYNASTY, 14TH-15TH CENTURY
The vase is freely carved on the tapering
body with lotus scroll above a petal-lappet
border. The tall, fared cylindrical neck is
carved with additional lotus scroll beneath
raised ribs on the trumpet-form mouth. The
vase is covered overall with a glaze of pale
olive-green color.

A similar Longquan celadon vase, but carved
with plantain leaves on the neck rather than
lotus scroll, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 28
May 2014, lot 3406.
