Christie’s is honored to present the following
selection of Chinese ceramics from the estate
of Michael L. Vermeer (1947-2015).
In 1976, Michael L. Vermeer joined Alan
Griggs (1939-1995) to form Vermeer &
Griggs, opening a gallery in Los Angeles.
Alan’s extensive knowledge of European
antiques, Oriental carpets, and Asian art,
specifically Chinese ceramics from the Shang
to Yuan dynasties, was complemented by
Michael’s strong interest in Ming and Qing
imperial porcelain. In 1989, the firm started
to deal exclusively in Asian art, specializing
in their favored field of Chinese ceramics.
When Alan became ill in 1991 the two
closed the gallery. Following Alan’s passing
in 1995, Michael continued the business
and continued to develop his knowledge of
Chinese porcelain.
