A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON PETAL-
LOBED PEAR-SHAPED VASE
YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368)
The vase is formed as six bracket-lobed
petals that rise from the tall, slightly splayed
foot to the out-curved rim, and the neck is
fanked by a pair of dragon heads suspending
fxed ring handles, all under a glaze of soft,
pale sea-green color that thins on the ribs
and pools to a darker color in the recesses.

A similar vase in the Chang Foundation is
illustrated by J. Spencer in Selected Chinese
Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, Taipei,
1990, pp. 162-63, no. 62, where it is described
as being of mallow section. Two other similar
vases, dated Yuan dynasty, are illustrated in
the exhibition catalogue, Xin’an Haidi Wenwu
(Cultural Relics from Sinan Seabed), National
Museum of Korea, 1977, nos. 44 and 45. See,
also, the similar vase sold at Christie’s New York,
22 March 2007, lot 286.

A RARE VERY LARGE LONGQUAN
CELADON CARVED DISH
EARLY MING DYNASTY, EARLY 15TH CENTURY
Heavily potted with rounded sides, the dish
is carved in the center with three clusters of
grapes borne on a leafy vine below a band
of intertwined lingzhi and bamboo in the
well and a narrow band of lotus sprays at the
rim, and on the exterior with eight fruiting
branches including loquat, pomegranate,
cherry and possibly lychee, all under a glaze
of olive-toned sea-green color that continues
over the foot to cover the base apart from the
unglazed fring ring.
