WU SHIXIAN (1845-1916)
Original name Qingyun, courtesy name Shixian, sorbriquet Pomo
daoren, a native of Shangyuan (now Nanjing), Jiangsu Province, Wu
Shixian made a successful living as a painter in Shanghai. Like many
of his contemporaries, Wu Shixian started to paint by learning from the
Orthodox School painters of the early Qing Dynasty, he later went to
study in Japan, where he learned the Japanese and western painting
skills. Upon returning to Shanghai, he began to infuse techniques of
perspective and light into his ink composition. The refreshing fusion
in portraying landscapes and figures along misty mountains and
rivers, brought him instant fame among Guangdong businessmen in
Shanghai, who were evidently more open-minded to novelty.
Wu Shixian was a member of the then influential painting society
Pinghua shuhua she, and was regarded as one of the “Nine Friends
of Pinghua”, together with Wu Dacheng, Gu Yun, Hu Gongshou, Qian
Hui’an, Ni Tian, Wu Qiunong, Jin Xinlan and Lu Hui.
