Yan Yutian of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection,
Signed and dated yiwei year, corresponding to 1895 Vol. 4, Part 2, Inside Painted, Hong Kong, 2000, p. 458, no. 612,
Of rounded rectangular shape, painted in delicate subdued tones of Yan Yutian lived and painted in the same Chongwen district of Beijing
purple, grays, reds and browns with a swallow flying over a lotus pond as the Ye family, as relayed to him by Ye Bengqi in 1974, who he
on one side below the inscription and seal Yutian, the reverse with a remembered from his younger days. His earliest dated work appears
squawking hawk perched on a gnarled prunus branch near bamboo; to be a single bottle of 1894 . The authors note that over sixty were
stopper. produced the following year, 1895, the year of our bottle. Another
2 1/2in (6.5cm) high bottle dated 1895, using a slightly brighter palette but also painted
with swallows above a lotus pond is illustrated ibid., pp. 468-469, no.
$2,000 - 3,000 617 and the following entry, pp. 470-471, no. 618 depicts a hawk on
a pine branch.
