A WOOD OKIMONO OF A MONKEY POSING AS A COLLECTOR
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
An amusing model of a seated monkey, using a horn lorgnette to
inspect an ivory netsuke of a monkey attached to a bronze tabako-ire
(tobacco pouch), the tabako-ire with a plain gilt-metal ojime and gilt-
metal mae-kanagu (clasp) in the form of a carp, the monkey’s eyes
inlaid in shell, signed in an inlaid rectangular red-lacquer tablet Sainin;
with an unrelated wood stand.
Overall: 21.1cm (8 5/16in) high;
the monkey: 15.3cm (6in) high. (2).
