A BLACK-LACQUER RECTANGULAR
INRO-DANSU (STORAGE CABINET FOR INRO)
Edo period (1615-1868), probably early 19th century
Of conventional form, decorated in gold lacquer takamaki-e,
hiramaki-e and e-nashiji with flowering plants and flowers on the
sides bordered by a stylised tendrils, the removable drop-front door
decorated on the exterior with Ariwara no Narihira (825-840) and
attendants before Mount Fuji and clouds, and the inside of the door
with a bridge spanning over a lake with thatched huts on the shore,
the interior fitted with seven drawers gold-lacquered with militaria
including halberds, fuchi-gashira, a blade, quiver and other auspicious
objects, each drawer applied with silvered-metal knops in the form of
chrysanthemum blossoms with silver ring handles; unsigned.
