Edo period (1615-1868), mid 19th century Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Each originally a handle for a vessel with an opening on its belly, The crustacean separately cast and assembled, the legs and claws
freely modelled with rather grotesque facial features and long tails fully articulated, the surface worked to resemble the crab’s natural
curling over their backs, one with its mouth open and the other shell, patinated to a dark brown; unsigned. 22cm (8 5/8in) wide.

Cast as a frog struggling to hold up a large gourd, the surface of the By Genryusai Seiya, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
frog’s skin finished in a rough texture and patinated a reddish-brown The two tigers fiercely roaring at each other, one pinning its foe down
contrasting with the smooth greenish-brown patina of the gourd; with its forepaws in triumph, signed in a rectangular reserve Seiya saku
signed on the reverse with chiselled cursive characters Shoun saku. (Made by Seiya); with an unassociated wood stand.
24.5cm (9¼in) high. The tigers: 10cm x 19cm (3 7/8in x 7½;
the wood stand: 9.7cm x 18cm (3 13/16in x 7 1/16in). (2).
