TWO JADE ANIMAL GROUPS
18TH CENTURY
The white and russet jade recumbent mythical
beast is carved with a lively expression, its
trifurcated tail coiled around its body. The pale
greenish-white jade recumbent cat is carved with
a stem in its mouth leading to a large leaf on its
back. A butterfy is carved in its paws and the other
butterfy resting on the leaf.
The larger, 2 in. (5 cm.) long
£5,000-8,000 $6,600-10,000
€5,600-8,900
The depiction of a cat and buttefy represents
the word ‘maodie’, which is a homonym for the
term referring to septegenarians and their older
counterparts, and hence becomes a wish for
longevity.
