A silk and metallic thread-
woven rug
Late Qing/Republic period
Woven in shades of gold, blue, red and ivory
against a metallic-woven ground with square
flower-head reserves separated by smaller
flower-heads, surrounded by bands filled with
archaistic dragons and peony flowers, the top
woven with five characters reading ‘Hou qing
gong yuyong’ (for imperial use in the hou qing
palace), finished with braided silk tassels to
the top and lower borders.

An embroidered blue silk gauze
dragon robe
Late Qing dynasty
The rich blue gauze ground embroidered in
counted stitch using gilt wrapped threads
for the dragons while the surrounding clouds
and auspicious emblems display white and
bright pastel threads above a tall lishui border
of pale yellow threads, the border bands and
cuff embroidered en suite on a black ground.

Kangxi period elements
Assembled from fragments of a Kangxi
period dragon robe, woven in subdued
colors on a rich gold ground, featuring eight
dynamic five-clawed dragons pursuing
flaming pearls amid cloud scrolls, enclosed
by sectioned bands with lishui patterns and
mountain-and-wave design; with flower
head-patterned cotton lining.
