A Manchu noblewoman’s apricot ground
embroidered dragon robe
Late Qing dynasty
The orange-rose ground with side openings displaying nine four-
clawed dragons worked in couched gilt threads and set amid cloud
scrolls, bats and shou medallions worked in shades of blue, red and
white above a tall and brilliantly colored lishui border, the added neck
band, sleeve bands and horseshoe cuffs of black silk embroidered
with dragons and waves in similar gilt and polychrome threads.

Including four joined panels taken from a blue ground dragon robe
preserving the dragons in couched gilt threads set amid cloud scrolls in
satin stitch and ribboned symbols in tightly knotted stitch above a tall lishui
border worked in white and brightly hued satin stitch; the narrow horizontal
panel along the top taken from a woman’s blue satin coat embroidered in
shades of blue and white with floral sprigs; the border bands of black silk
brocade woven with shou medallions in fine gilt-wrapped threads.
