PROVENANCE
Collection of Mr du Gardin, French businessman who worked
in China in the 1930s-1940s, directly acquired from the artist.
Mr du Gardin wrote on the back of the painting to immortalize
the day when he met Qi Baishi at his studio. According to
his notes, Qi Baishi explained to him that the red colour he
used was a foreign and expensive pigment and he purposely
painted two butterfies above the red fowers to add more
value to the painting. The collector was very pleased and
purchased this present painting for 30 yuans.
