TWO JAPANESE LACQUER SNUFF BOTTLES
One 1820-1850, the other 1880-1920
The first of flattened spade shape and decorated in hiramaki-e
and takamaki-e with hirame embellishments with a rare continuous
night scene with cranes flying across a mountainous lake or coastal
landscape with a tall waterfall with a storied high-walled building
nestled amidst rockwork, pine and other trees, all below a silvered full
moon and clouds; the other bottle of tapering rounded rectangular
shape with painted lacquer decoration laid on a metal ground,
delicately painted in fine details with an interior with a lady by a moon
window on one main face and on the other with a scene looking in
through a moon window to a lady coiffing her hair in a mirror before a
floral-ground screen, the narrow sides with somada-style (lac burguate)
cell ground.
the first 2 5/8in (6.6cm) high, probably original stopper; 3in (7.6cm)
high, stopper (2).
$2,000 - 3,000
